Breast implant exchange surgery removes older breast implants and replaces them with newer ones. There are multiple reasons why implants may need to be replaced, including rupture, folding, leaking, wrinkling, or hardening. Replacing implants may be required to restore the original results. Sometimes an implant exchange is combined with a breast lift (mastopexy) to maximize the aesthetic result.
When planning a breast implant exchange procedure, patients should know that silicone implants offer distinct advantages over saline implants. New gel implants (called “gummy bear” or “cohesive gel” implants) are soft, natural, comfortable, and warrantied for life. Since there is no liquid filling inside, they cannot deflate. Saline implants are not recommended due to the fact that they are too firm, have a higher chance of rippling, and can deflate.
Patients considering an implant exchange procedure should discuss the pros and cons of different procedures with an experienced plastic surgeon. Residents of Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota, and surrounding communities depend on the expert guidance of Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Daniel Greenwald of Bayshore Plastic Surgery. Dr. Greenwald has decades of experience and he has performed numerous breast augmentation revision surgeries.
