Breast reduction surgery is designed to reduce the size of a woman’s breasts. This type of surgery has two main goals: to reshape the breasts so that they are more proportionate with the rest of a patient’s body (an aesthetic concern), and to eliminate physical discomfort caused by overly large breasts (a medical issue). At Bayshore Plastic Surgery in Tampa, Florida, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Greenwald has been performing breast reduction and other plastic surgery procedures for more than two decades. During that time, he has acquired extensive experience and highly refined skills for which he is widely known and respected.
Prior to recommending a breast reduction procedure, Dr. Greenwald will meet with a prospective patient at his office in Tampa, FL, to confirm that she is healthy enough to undergo surgery and that her expectations are realistic. As part of this process, he will fully discuss her needs and objectives. For instance, in addition to reducing breast size, breast reduction surgery can:
- Enhance the shape, contour, and position of the breasts
- Reposition low nipples and areolas
- Allow a woman to more comfortably participate in exercise and other physical activities
- Alleviate neck, back, and shoulder pain and hand numbness caused by the weight of overly large breasts
- Eliminate skin irritation that develops underneath the breasts
When performing breast reduction surgery, Dr. Greenwald will usually begin by folding the breast and placing temporary sutures to hold it in place. After creating an ideal shape, he will remove the sutures and, using the folded area for guidance, trim away the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, and then reposition the nipples and areolas. One technique that he often uses involves three incisions: one around the nipple, one spanning vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and one within the breast crease. If necessary and desired, Dr. Greenwald can also perform liposuction to further enhance the final outcome by suctioning out excess fat from the underarm area (axilla) and bra line.
