Cosmetic liposuction is used to remove fat that hasn’t responded to regular exercise and a healthy diet. The procedure improves body contouring and proportions, and can be used to treat the abdomen, waist, thighs, buttocks, back, neck, and other areas of the body. Whether a plastic surgeon recommends traditional or ultrasonic liposuction will depend on a patient’s specific needs.

Traditional cosmetic liposuction uses a suctioning cannula, or hollow tube. The tube is inserted through a small incision and fat deposits are broken up and suctioned out as the cannula is moved around beneath the skin.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) begins with the injection of a tumescent solution into the treatment area, which helps to break down fat cells. Unlike traditional liposuction, the cannula used for UAL emits high-frequency sound waves to liquefy fat before removal. UAL is a popular alternative to traditional cosmetic liposuction, as it decreases the risk of excessive tissue damage, bleeding, and scarring. Additionally, UAL can remove a larger volume of fat and can target hard-to-treat areas, such as the chin, neck, and knees.
