Blepharoplasty, which removes excess fat and loose skin from the upper and lower eyelids, is a relatively safe procedure that is generally followed by an easy recovery. To ensure quick healing and an optimal result, it is important to strictly follow your plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions.
Prior to your blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, your plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication. It is recommended that you fill the prescription before the procedure. Additionally, you should arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Following the procedure, your eyes may or may not be bandaged and, as the anesthesia wears off, your eyelids may feel sore and tight.
Before you go home, your blepharoplasty surgeon will likely give you specific, post-operative instructions, which may include:
- Using ice packs or cold compresses to reduce swelling
- Keeping your head elevated for several days following surgery to help decrease swelling
- Cleaning your eyes by carefully removing any discharge from your eyelids without disrupting your stitches
- Keeping your eyes moist with eye drops to combat itchiness and dryness
You may experience temporary blurred vision, excessive tearing, and sensitivity to light, but these side effects are relatively common and will eventually clear up. Bruising around the eyes is also common after blepharoplasty, but diminishes within two weeks for most patients.
A successful recovery after blepharoplasty begins with choosing an experienced plastic surgeon to perform the procedure.
