A patient who undergoes breast enhancement surgery must make many decisions, including breast implant type, shape, size, and placement. In addition, a patient should also discuss using smooth or textured implants with her plastic surgeon. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Daniel Greenwald of Bayshore Plastic Surgery has decades of experience performing breast augmentation procedures and recommends smooth implants to his patients. He has found that smooth implants have distinct advantages over textured implants and provide his patients with the best overall results.
Textured implants have a rough outer shell, designed to bond with breast tissue to hold the implant in place. These implants were originally designed to help prevent capsular contracture – a complication that involves scar tissue forming around and squeezing an implant – but this claim continues to be debated. Rippling can still occur with textured implants. Additionally, since textured implants are thicker than smooth implants they may be more noticeable and therefore less natural looking.
Smooth implants are the most common choice for breast enhancement surgery, as they are designed to move freely within the implant pocket and do not bond to breast tissue. Proponents say that this allows for a more natural look and softer feel. Smooth implants are also more affordable than textured implants and don’t need to be replaced as frequently.
