Roughly half of the male population in the United States is afflicted in some way with gynecomastia, also known as enlarged breasts, man boobs, or moobs. If you live in or near Florida’s Tampa region and have gynecomastia, Bayshore Plastic Surgery may be able to help. Our expert plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Greenwald can assess your case and provide you with an effective chest reduction to create a more manly silhouette just as he has for patients from Tampa, Clearwater, Naples, Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and elsewhere in Florida:

Gynecomastia occurs when an excess amount of fat or glandular tissue accumulates in one or both of the male breasts, or man boobs. It is believed men develop this condition when they begin to produce more estrogen than testosterone. This is caused by natural hormone changes, medications, and certain health conditions. Gynecomastia surgery can eliminate the excess tissue that results, helping patients to:

  • Gain self-confidence about their physical appearance
  • Feel more comfortable shirtless and in tighter garments
  • Eliminate back pain caused by extra weight in the chest area

What happens during gynecomastia surgery?

At Bayshore Plastic Surgery in Tampa, gynecomastia surgery begins with liposuction. Dr. Greenwald makes a small incision around the edge of the nipple and inserting a thin tube attached to a vacuum pump to break up and remove excess fatty tissue. You may feel some vibration or friction during the procedure, but patients rarely feel any pain. In cases where gynecomastia is caused by excessive glandular tissue rather than fat, Dr. Greenwald performs male breast reduction surgery by removing the tissue through a small incision made near the underarm area or on the dark skin surrounding the nipple.

Surgical Concerns

After your surgery, you may have a small tube inserted under your skin to drain excess fluid and your chest may be wrapped to keep skin firm and in place. Patients will generally feel swollen and bruised after the procedure, and this typically lasts about a week. Although you can usually return to work soon after the procedure, it is advisable to refrain from strenuous activities for about four weeks.
