What Is a Mommy Makeover?
Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can create dramatic and lasting changes in a woman’s physical appearance. For women who would like to address these changes, a “mommy makeover” – a customized combination of body contouring procedures – can help. One potential advantage of this combined approach to cosmetic plastic surgery is that it may involve a single surgical session and a single recovery period.
Oftentimes, a mommy makeover will target a woman’s breasts and abdomen, but it is not a “package deal” with set components. Rather, each treatment plan is custom-designed to meet the patient’s individual needs and goals. For instance, some women want to surgically address lost breast volume, sagging breasts, stretch marks, a protruding tummy, lax skin in their midsection, or lingering pockets of excess fat in their abdomen, hips, lower back, buttocks, or thighs.
The importance of healthy living
While a mommy makeover can be effective, it is not a substitute for weight loss, good nutrition, or regular physical activity. Therefore, before considering this or any other type of cosmetic plastic surgery, a woman should make a sincere attempt at post-pregnancy weight loss with diet and exercise. In fact, the best candidates for a mommy makeover are healthy and physically fit, and these individuals are also more likely to maintain their surgical results over the long run.
With that said, healthy eating habits and consistent workouts can only go so far and will have no effect on loose skin, lost breast volume, small pockets of residual fat, or diastasis recti (a condition in which the large abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy, resulting in a protruding tummy). By surgically addressing these issues, a mommy makeover can help a woman “cross the finish line” in achieving her post-pregnancy appearance goals.
What procedures can be included in a mommy makeover?
To help a woman bridge the gap between the results she achieves with diet and exercise and her aesthetic goals, a mommy makeover may include:
- A tummy tuck – Also known as an abdominoplasty, this procedure can tighten loose skin in the abdominal region and, if necessary, repair separated abdominal muscles.
- Breast surgery – After pregnancy, a woman might find that her breasts appear saggy or deflated, or remain more enlarged than she would like. To address these issues, a mommy makeover may include a breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction procedure.
- Liposuction – To enhance the shape and contour of a specific area of a woman’s lower body, a small amount of stubborn fat can be surgically suctioned out (if there is a sufficient amount of skin elasticity in the targeted area).
In addition to achieving and maintaining a healthy, stable body weight for at least six months after pregnancy, a woman should finish breastfeeding before proceeding with a mommy makeover. Also, she should not intend to have any more children. Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding after a mommy makeover can significantly impact the surgical results.
