Enhance the Effects of Your Hard-Earned Weight Loss With a Tummy Tuck Performed in Tampa, FL

Tummy Tuck Tampa FLA tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to smooth and firm the abdominal region by removing loose skin and tightening lax muscles. For the right patient, a tummy tuck can lead to an outstanding aesthetic result. However, neither this nor any other type of cosmetic plastic surgery is a substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise, which are still proven to be the best ways to lose excess body weight.

Dr. Daniel Greenwald, a Board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Bayshore Plastic Surgery, has been performing tummy tucks and other cosmetic procedures in Tampa, Florida, for more than two decades. Here are some points that Dr. Greenwald often makes when educating his patients about tummy tuck surgery:

A Tummy Tuck Is not a Weight-Loss Method

While it is not uncommon for a patient to lose a few pounds after an abdominoplasty, this type of cosmetic surgery is generally most appropriate for an individual who has maintained a stable, healthy body weight (at or near ideal) for at least several months. Rather than a weight-loss method, a tummy tuck should be viewed as a body contouring procedure. Because this type of surgery involves removing and tightening loose skin, it is most effective when performed after weight loss.

A Tummy Tuck May not Improve Stretch Marks

An abdominoplasty cannot directly address stretch marks. Because the abdominal skin is pulled downward during the procedure, any stretch marks may move to a lower position on the abdomen. With that said, it is possible for a stretch mark to be eliminated along with excess skin that is removed during a tummy tuck. But, again, that is not the goal of the procedure.

Abdominal Liposuction Is Often Performed Along With a Tummy Tuck

After the abdominal skin is pulled downward and tightened during a tummy tuck, a slight bulge may form or contour may be lost in the hip area. Therefore, in order to achieve an optimal result, liposuction may be suggested along with an abdominoplasty to help reshape the treated area. For instance, liposuction can be very effective for sculpting the waistline and “love handles.”

The Desired Effect Can Sometimes by Achieved With Abdominal Liposuction Alone

For some individuals, liposuction can be very effective for removing isolated pockets of excess fatty tissue that have settled around the abdomen. However, in order for a liposuction procedure to be successful, a certain amount of skin tightness and elasticity must be present at the treatment site. Because the skin and muscles in the abdominal region are often affected by weight fluctuations and hormonal imbalances, lipo may not be the best option for treating that area. Here’s why: If abdominal fat is reduced with liposuction, but loose belly skin is not addressed, the skin will not “snap back” properly after surgery. Instead, it will simply hang from the newly contoured abdomen. For this reason, a tummy tuck may be suggested instead of – or in addition to – abdominal liposuction.

A Tummy Tuck May Provide Medical Benefits

An abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure, the goal of which is to achieve an aesthetic benefit. However, in some cases, tummy tuck surgery may provide a medical benefit as well. For instance, some studies suggest that it may help with urinary incontinence by tightening the body’s core muscles. Additionally, during an abdominoplasty, a surgeon can repair the rectus diastasis if necessary. This “gap” between the rectus muscles, which sometimes occurs naturally after childbirth or a significant weight loss, can cause the abdomen to protrude. For this reason, a tummy tuck is often an integral part of a mommy makeover treatment plan. For a patient who has a pronounced diastasis, a surgical repair may improve back pain, abdominal bloating, and core stability.

A Patient Must Commit to Maintaining the Result of a Tummy Tuck

Weight gain or loss after an abdominoplasty can affect the final outcome. Therefore, a patient must be committed to maintaining the results of tummy tuck surgery with a nutritious diet and regular exercise.
